  • At a public meeting a member of the Petaluma Animal Services Advisory Committee spoke of dog fightings in Petaluma as a tolerable activity.
  • A member of a City of Petaluma Park and Rec Commission spoke of getting rid of the beautiful white swans in the park.  Did they get rid of them and how did they accomplish that?
  • A Petaluma City employee spoke at a public meeting and told of killing all bullfrogs on a City of Petaluma property.
  • Homeless, feral and outdoors cats are outlawed in most areas of the City of Petaluma.

Petaluma unfriendly to animals

A Little Tabby
Petaluma prohibits anyone from feeding homeless cats
from most areas of the City of Petaluma

Below I am listing some of the most recent incidents I asked City of Petaluma Manager John Brown and Mayor Pamela Torliatt to review:

  • A feral cat ordinance written by animal shelter management and Petaluma wetlands docents was presented to city council with misleading information and council passed the ordinance in 2004.  Since then cats have been trapped and killed by the hundreds each year.  The same ordinance also punishes feral cat caregivers who were forced to abandon their colonies out of fear.
  • Petaluma Animal Shelter accepted two seven-year-old pure bred German shepherds last July, 07.  The dogs had never been separated their entire lives and they were also caged together at the shelter.  Yoyo, the male dog, was very dependant on his mate Wicket and he showed severe anxiety when separated.  Shelter manager Nancee Tavares adopted Yoyo and took him home leaving Wicket alone.  Ms. Tavares euthanized Yoyo soon after she adopted him and the reason she euthanized Yoyo was due to "separation anxiety," she said.  Nancee mentioned no other medical reason.  (I have this conversation on video tape and on a recorder).  Petaluma Animal Shelter did not contact the breed rescue in an attempt to save these dogs' lives.
  • At a Petaluma Animal Services Advisory Committee Meeting, Chair Charlie Reinhart while speaking about education for Latino community about humane treatment of animals, Ms. Reinhart praised a local trainer who works with Latino children and their dogs that are "used as fighting dogs."  No reaction from any committee member except animal control officer, Jeff Charter, who suddenly disappeared from my camera lenses.  (All on tape and more)
  • Bullfrogs are killed and eradicated from Petaluma wetlands.
  • Bees and their hives are classified a nuisance within the City of Petaluma and they must eradicate.
  • Mute Swans have become a nuisance comparable to feral cats according to park and wetlands docents and Petaluma is discussing how to get rid of them at Shollenberger Park and Petaluma Wetlands.  The same docents are responsible for trapping and killing most cats.  Will they do the same with the swans?  Mute Swan
  • Each year Petaluma Sonoma Marin Fair proudly exhibits an "Ugliest Dog Contest" at the Petaluma Fairgrounds, a property owned by the City of Petaluma.  This year's winner is a dismembered little dog missing one leg to cancer and one eye to an attack.  The audience laughed at the ravaged little body and screamed its disgust at the very sick animal and proclaimed it ugliest and the winner.  The little dog, probably sedated or too weak to react, slept on and off with  its tongue hanging out.  The owner told a reporter for a national television show that she was afraid Gus would not live long enough to make it to the show.  They came all the way from Florida to participate into this "famous" Petaluma show. . .     One can imagine how a child, a war veteran or anyone missing a limb might feel about public reaction to their own disability.  This has been going on for twenty years and is publicized nationwide leaving many Petaluma residents ashamed of this barbaric contest.
These are cases that I am aware of and I wonder what else is out there.  I have been speaking publicly about the feral cat issue for many years and after working several hundreds hours on that issue alone these past few months, I have come to the conclusion that feral cats are a part of a much larger problem and we need to get to the core of the problem.  That is the City of Petaluma and some employees.

A starting point to making Petaluma an animal friendly city:

Animal shelter employees need to take courses in humane treatment of animals and if unwilling to conform, they should be terminated.   Animal Shelter employees need to set an example for the rest of the population by promoting TNR for homeless cats, educating the public about spay and neuter their pets, teaching respect for all  animals.

I would like the City of Petaluma to use its influence to convince the Petaluma Fair management to end the "Ugliest Dog Contest" I don't think this is anything to be proud even with healthy dogs.  I think it is a barbaric game that promotes disrespect for animals. Yes, it gets publicity, but do we want that kind of publicity?

City of Petaluma needs to control Shollenberger Park/Petaluma Wetlands docents and employees of the City of Petaluma  and Water Recycling Facility and end the carnage going on at the Petaluma Shollenberger Park, Ellis Creek  and the Petaluma Water Recycling Facility.  Thousands of animals have been killed at these locations alone since 2004.  It is wrong, it demoralizes a public and the City of Petaluma needs to address this urgently.

Thus far, I have not heard of any public acknowledgement nor that the City made any corrections to protect  animals from cruelty in the City of Petaluma

At a public meeting a member of the Petaluma Animal Services Advisory Committee spoke of dog fightings as an acceptable event in Petaluma.   A member of a City of Petaluma Park and Rec Commission spoke of getting rid of the beautiful white swans in the park.  A Petaluma City employee spoke at a public meeting and told of killing all bullfrogs on a City of Petaluma property.

A review of the feral cat ordinance will be on the City Council Agenda sometime after January  2009.  A recommendation to remove 1/2 from Petaluma Wetlands and One Block from all City Parks will be considered.

It is a step forward, but not enough.  Petaluma needs to do better and YOU need to get involved.

Attention:
Feral cat ordinance will be decided by Petaluma City Council,  Monday  May 18, 2009    7:00 P.M.
